Some of our Board of Directors:

 

Thomasine M. Miles is an original member of the Uplift Community Foundation’s, Inc, management team and is an original and present member of its Board of Directors.  When the foundation was formed in 1986, she served as the Recording Secretary of its Board and then took on the awesome task of Correspondence Secretary.  Formerly, Miss Miles was the Public Information Coordinator and was promoted to the Communications Director in 2003.  She was then  re-elected as a member of the Board of Directors.

As Communications Director, she develops media kits for the foundation, writes and edits press releases and brochures, and manages its overall communications vehicles. She also creates and designs persuasive content for many of the Foundation’s initiatives. She manages Media Relations and assists with the development and promotion of communication strategies, materials, and plans.

Miss Miles is a graduate of the University of the District of Columbia with a B.A. Degree in Journalism which she received in 1987.  Upon attending the university, she was a member of Phi Beta Lambda, which is  a business organization.  She has written for both of UDC’s student newspapers, Trilogy and Free Voice, the Capital Spotlight, Washington Afro, New Times, Intowner, Consumer Utility News and has interned with WUSA 9 News, which was formerly WDVM.  Miss Miles has also been employed with the Federal Government and private industry.  She is a member of the National Association of Black Journalist, (NABJ) and a member of the Washington Association of Black Journalists (WABJ).

She believes that her knowledge of writing, editing, and Media Relations equips her with the skills to promote the goals and mission of the foundation which is to provide opportunities designed to improve the socio-economic status of all people and the communities it serves.

Marion P. Miles is the co-founder of the Uplift Community Foundation, Inc. She is an original Charter Board member and has served on its Board of Directors since its inception in 1986. During the Board of Directors first meeting, Marion Miles was elected as its Secretary. Soon after being elected as Secretary to the Uplift Community Foundations Board of Directors, she was promoted to Vice-President and Resource Development Chairperson. In 2001, Marion was elevated to Senior Vice President of the Foundation with the responsibility of serving as the Board Liaison for overseeing its Fundraising and Resource Development Activities. In this position, Mrs. Miles’ reports directly to the CEO while she oversees the Foundation’s fundraising activities in building the organization’s name recognition, fundraising efforts and projects, events, and other special programs that would attract other potential donors and sponsors.  She also oversees the research, analysis, and recommendation of short and long-term fundraising goals on an ongoing basis.  Marion Miles participates in strategic planning for the Foundation, and also oversees and works with special events on a frequent basis.

 

 

Marion. Miles is a native Washingtonian and is a product of the D.C. Public Schools.  With an extraordinary talent for singing traditional music, Marion set out to audition for several groups around the Washington Area.  Her Golden Alto voice was soon recognized by some of the great Musicians in the Metropolitan Washington area including the director of her High School Chorus, the Choir Director of her church and later by the renowned Sanctuary Choristers of over one hundred voices.  While singing with this group, the Sanctuary Choristers went on to record a number of Albums, Videos and tapes. Marion Miles has always been involved in many church and community activities.  She retired from the Federal Government where she was a management technician for the Department of Defense.  During her tenure of government service, she received many awards for her productivity and efficiency.

 

Mark S. Roberts, CPA

Mr. Mark S. Roberts is a board member of the Uplift Community Foundation, Inc.   He is also a member of the President’s advisory cabinet with broad experience in accounting.  He has been the owner and certified public accountant for Roberts & Associates since 1982.  Mark has a master of Business Administration from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Business Administration from Texas A&M University.  He received his license as a certified public accountant in 1973.  Before getting involved in accounting, he was an audit manager for the law firm, Seidman & Seidman in New York City and Washington, D.C. from 1970 to 1982.

His professional affiliations include the Greater Washington Area Society of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Maryland Association of Accountants, the D.C. Chamber of Commerce, the Business and Professional Association of Georgetown, the British American Business Association, the Washington International Trade Association, and the Community Associations Institute.  Before getting involved with the foundation, he was a member of the board and treasurer of the Francis Scott Key Park Foundation and the secretary of the India-U.S. Foundation.
